My Favorite Smoothie Recipe - The Perfect Breakfast

All too often, before my clients start working with me for health coaching sessions, they rave about having smoothies for breakfast. However, smoothies are not all created equal, many of them are basically loaded sugar bombs which lack other important nutrients needed for long lasting energy, blood sugar control, and satiety. Blending banana and a lot of other fruit with store bought almond milk simply isn’t enough to tie you over until the next meal. Ideally, breakfast is one of the most substantial meals of the day. When we have a healthy, nutritionally balanced breakfast, that is low glycemic within an hour or so of waking up each morning, we set ourselves up for mindful eating habits through out the rest of the day. Make fiber, protein and fat your best friends when it comes to making smoothies… here’s an example of how I like to make mine:

  • 1/2 cup frozen organic berries
  • 1/2 small banana
  • 1 cup filtered water (optionally add more until you reach your desired consistency)
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 small ripe avocado
  • 1 tbsp ground flax seeds
  • 1 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp nut butter (sugar free, like Artisana
  • Optionally, go green and add a handful of organic baby spinach

Blend all ingredients until smooth. Enjoy served in a cup or bowl with toppings of your choice: pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, goji berries, and raw cacao nibs are some of my favorites.
